Second Grade Course Descriptions
Biblical Foundations
Goals for K-4 through Fifth Grade:
- Recognize God’s existence and character.
- Understand the Bible as God’s inspired word and absolute truth.
- Use the Bible consistently to locate and memorize selected verses.
- Pray daily.
- Acknowledge need for salvation and respond to Jesus as God’s provision.

Second Grade – Our focus in 2nd grade is “The Promised Savior” begins with creation and continues through the ministry of Jesus. Students will follow God’s plan throughout the prophecies of the Old Testament that point to man’s need for a Savior to the fulfillment of our promised Savior, Jesus, recorded in the New Testament. The class timeline will allow students to sequence these events and the extensive study of the gospel of Luke will allow students to study the details of the life of Jesus. 2nd grade students participate in several service projects throughout the year to share Jesus’ love in practical ways. Students also memorize scripture throughout the year; passages include Psalm 8, Psalm 23, John 14: 1-7.
History-Social Studies
Students look at people, places, and events from a Biblical worldview, using timelines to develop chronological thinking. Four components are included: History, Geography, Civics, and Economics. Students gain knowledge and understanding of people’s lives, and discover causes and consequences of their actions. Students learn about the places people live, the rules and responsibilities they live by, and the ways in which they work to meet their needs.
Second Grade – History: Native Americans of North America, Separatists, Colonial Days, Pioneers, National Symbols and Holidays. Geography: Locate continents, oceans, hemispheres, poles, equator, cardinal and intermediate directions, physical features on a map, countries bordering U.S., types of maps and map components. Construct and label maps. Civics: Purposes of rules and laws, democracy, rights and responsibilities in a community. Economics: Trading and currency, consumers and producers, productive resources, goods and services, working together in a community.
Mathematics
Focus Areas for K-4 through Fifth Grade:
- Number (Properties, Operations, Computation)
- Algebra (Patterns, Relations, Functions)
- Geometry (Spatial Sense)
- Measurement (Units, Systems, Processes)
- Data Analysis and Probability
Second Grade – Number: know addition facts through 20, add and subtract fluently, count by 2, 5, and 3, read and write numerals to 1000, recognize place value of hundreds, tens, and ones, Use ordinals: first-eighteenth, compare any two numbers <100 using symbols (=, <, >), read, write and model fractions, use the commutative and associative properties of addition, determine odd and even numbers, add and subtract two-digit numbers. Patterns: multiples of 10 and 100, use charts and tables to solve problems. Geometry: describe three-dimensional solids by faces, classify and describe two-dimensional figures, congruent figures, single transformation. Measurement: identify months (with number of days), elapsed time within a month, time to 5-minute intervals, elapsed time in hours, use fewest coins to show amounts to $1.00, use dollar sign and decimal point, compare temperatures on a Fahrenheit scale, measure length, capacity/volume, and mass using customary and metric units, find perimeter, find area using a grid. Data: compare data using charts and graphs.
Science
Students know and discern the world in which they live through observation, study, and experimentation, including the use of available equipment and technology. They question, observe, compare, use tools, describe, explain, predict, use data to solve problems, and use appropriate scientific language in these areas: Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. Student exploration leads to greater explanation and appreciation of God’s creation and encourages responsible stewardship.
Second Grade – Animal Groups * Life Cycles * Exploring and Measuring Matter * Plants and Soil Unit * Weather Unit * Solar System: Day and Night
Language Arts
Children grow tremendously during these years as God’s gifts of language, thought, and imagination are put to work in listening, speaking, writing, and reading. They are challenged to think deeply, read widely, and write purposefully in all subjects. They develop extensive vocabularies and understand how language carries beliefs and ideas that shape the world. They read a variety of books and recognize quality literature. They write clearly in various forms as they share their thinking with others. They ask questions to move their learning forward. They use language skills to know God, to understand themselves and others, and to make sense of the world in which they live.
Second Grade – Follow directions, speak to an audience, and listen to answer questions. Use phonetic skills to read and write words at grade level. Write complete sentences with correct end punctuation, using legible manuscript writing. Capitalize sentences and proper nouns, and use commas in dates and addresses. Write paragraphs with organization: sequence, main idea, details, cause and effect. Write, revise, and edit stories, letters, retellings, and poetry. Identify nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Use abbreviations, antonyms, synonyms, homonyms, and contractions. Reading strategies: story elements, questions, mental images, predictions, summaries, context clues, expository text features. Read fluently at grade level, including fairy tales, folk tales, and nonfiction. Use dictionary, charts and graphs, graphic organizers, and glossary.
