Third Grade Course Descriptions
Biblical Foundations
Goals for K-4 through Fifth Grade:
- Recognize God’s existence and character.
- Understand the Bible as God’s inspired word and absolute truth.
- Use the Bible consistently to locate and memorize selected verses.
- Pray daily.
- Acknowledge need for salvation and respond to Jesus as God’s provision.
- Know and practice Biblical principles in relationships and service to others.
Third Grade - Using God’s Word, the students will understand how God works in the lives of people. By using a time line, the students will begin to recognize the chronological order of His story. 3rd graders study the lives of many Biblical and historical people, including: Paul, Stephen, Abraham, Moses, and David. An extensive reading of the Gospel of John allows for a focused study of Jesus’ life and ministry. Through scripture memory, reflective writing, illustrating, and prayer, the students will have the opportunity to apply God’s work in their own lives.
History-Social Studies
Students look at people, places, and events from a Biblical worldview, using timelines to develop chronological thinking. Four components are included: History, Geography, Civics, and Economics. Students gain knowledge and understanding of people’s lives, and discover causes and consequences of their actions. Students learn about the places people live, the rules and responsibilities they live by, and the ways in which they work to meet their needs.
Third Grade – History: Columbus, John Smith and Pocahontas, Miles Standish, William Penn, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Daniel Boone, Civil War period (includes Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, Clara Barton, David Livingstone), George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Noah Webster. Geography: Four hemispheres, Prime Meridian, Regions, Names and locations of the fifty states, Physical Maps (make, label features, and interpret), Transportation and communication links, Conservation and use of environment. Civics: Levels of government (local, state, federal), Fundamental ideals of democracy, Election process (Bugident Unit). Economics: Productive resources, scarcity, supply and demand, profit, functions of money, saving and giving.
Mathematics
Focus Areas for K-4 through Fifth Grade:
- Number (Properties, Operations, Computation)
- Algebra (Patterns, Relations, Functions)
- Geometry (Spatial Sense)
- Measurement (Units, Systems, Processes)
- Data Analysis and Probability
Third Grade – Number: write/compare whole numbers to 10,000, expanded notation, compare/order 4-digit numbers, fractional parts of a whole or set, write equivalent fractions using models, decimals to hundredths in money, commutative and identity properties of multiplication, add and subtract multi-digit numbers, round numbers to 100, know multiplication facts, multiply and divide 2-digit by 1-digit numbers. Algebra: use multiples of 10 and 100, write/solve equations to find unknown number, use symbols (<, >, =, ≠) to compare and solve equations, complete/explain charts/tables. Geometry: build/compare three-dimensional solids using faces, edges, vertices, identify regular polygons, draw and label: line, line segment, ray, intersecting and parallel lines, symmetry in a polygon, describe a flip, slide , and turn, points on a coordinate grid. Measurement: days and weeks in year, elapsed time in months, minutes in hour, explain A.M. and P.M., time to minute and use half-past, quarter after, quarter “till”, elapsed time to 5-minute intervals, count change with fewest coins up to $10.00, Fahrenheit and Celsius temperatures, standard units (length, capacity, weight), convert larger units to smaller, find perimeter, area, and volume. Data: design a survey question, organize and interpret data, simple probability experiments.
Science
Students know and discern the world in which they live through observation, study, and experimentation, including the use of available equipment and technology. They question, observe, compare, use tools, describe, explain, predict, use data to solve problems, and use appropriate scientific language in these areas: Life Science, Physical Science, and Earth Science. Student exploration leads to greater explanation and appreciation of God’s creation and encourages responsible stewardship.
Third Grade - Animals (vertebrates – invertebrates) * Food Chains * Ecosystems: Forest, Desert, Water * Exploring Light (reflection, refraction, absorption) * Matter: physical changes * Sound and Wave Motion * Simple Machines * Phases of the Moon * Water Cycle * Earth’s Rocks, Minerals and Soils
Language Arts
Children grow tremendously during these years as God’s gifts of language, thought, and imagination are put to work in listening, speaking, writing, and reading. They are challenged to think deeply, read widely, and write purposefully in all subjects. They develop extensive vocabularies and understand how language carries beliefs and ideas that shape the world. They read a variety of books and recognize quality literature. They write clearly in various forms as they share their thinking with others. They ask questions to move their learning forward. They use language skills to know God, to understand themselves and others, and to make sense of the world in which they live.
Third Grade – Listen to summarize, clarify and explain ideas. Read and write multi-syllable words and sight words. Write simple and compound sentences, eliminate fragments, and use correctly possessives, verb tenses, capitalization, end marks, apostrophes, commas in a series, homographs, and homonyms. Write multiple paragraphs, using transition words, details to support main idea, and precise vocabulary. Write, revise, and edit descriptions, fables, tall tales, and poetry, with legible cursive writing. Identify subjects and predicates, nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and prepositions. Read fluently at grade level and identify story elements. Read purposefully: question, visualize, summarize, infer. Read and paraphrase expository text; read maps, charts, and graphs. Use information sources: dictionary, index, encyclopedia, online references.
