LRCA Excels in Economics Arkansas Competition

Little Rock Christian business teacher and students were honored at a recent state-wide awards banquet held at Verizon Arena.  The banquet was the culmination of the fall 10 week SMG or Stock Market Game, an investment simulation program which introduces 4th – 12th grade students to the exciting world of investing in the stock market and the role it plays in the U.S. and world economies. It was sponsored by Arkansas businesses and Economics Arkansas, an educational organization which promotes economic literacy in Arkansas.

Susie Thompson, LRCA High School Business Education teacher was awarded the title of “2010 Overall Winning Advisor”. High school seniors, Jack Panyard and Sarah Johnson, in the high school division achieved first place overall statewide. Middle school students Landon Salman, Robert Thompson and Carter Wade won third place in the middle school bracket.

A recent independent research study concluded that students who participated in this program scored significantly higher on math and financial literacy tests than students who did not participate! The object of the program is to grow a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio during a 10-week period each semester. Current events, social studies, economics, math and reading are integrated into this experience as teams use critical thinking skills to make wise investment decisions. A luncheon is held each semester for the winning teams, plus they receive t-shirts, certificates, trophies and cash prizes.

LRCA was among the top 3% of schools in Arkansas to participate.
