LITTLE ROCK CHRISTIAN ACADEMY COLLECTS 4539 POUNDS OF FOOD FOR ARKANSAS RICE DEPOT

Little Rock – March 5, 2009

Little Rock Christian Academy Elementary School sponsored a service project during the week of February 23-27 entitled “Hearts for Hunger”.  Students were encouraged to bring canned and boxed food to school each day to donate to the “Food for Kids” program sponsored by the Arkansas Rice Depot.  Grocery shopping lists were distributed to students and families that included “kid-friendly” ready-to-eat- food suggestions for purchase.  The Rice Depot supplied large drop-off barrels in each hallway for donated food items.  By the end of the week students were able to fill 65 barrels of food totaling 4539 pounds.  “The generosity is overwhelming” said Ann Chami, Little Rock Christian Academy Elementary Principal. “Even in these difficult economic times our families have chosen to give exceedingly and abundantly to those in need.  The joy and concern the students have shown has truly been a blessing.”

Food for Kids is a simple program.  The Arkansas Rice Depot provides new backpacks and kid friendly ready– to-eat food to participating schools.  Through a principal appointed program coordinator, the food is distributed to students based on need.  During the 2006-2007 school year Food for Kids assisted more than 18,000 hungry children in 502 schools across the state with backpacks filled with food, school supplies, personal care products and other items.
