Little Rock Christian Academy Announces National Merit Semifinalists And National Merit Achievement SemifinalistFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Little Rock – October 28, 2009 Little Rock Christian Academy is proud to announce that seniors Tess Coker and Hope Coleman have qualified as National Merit Semifinalists and Lesley Hill has qualified as a National Merit Achievement Semifinalist. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 National Merit Scholarships and 800 Achievement Scholarship awards that will be offered next spring. Mr. Joe Neff, Upper School Principal at LRCA, said “These ladies are great examples of students who apply themselves to academic excellence and positively impact others in their activities outside the classroom. We are extremely proud of them.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) – a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.5 million entrants each year and by meeting published program participation requirements. In September, about 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, are notified that they have qualified as Semifinalists. To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and all other requirements. To learn more about the program please visit http://www.nationalmerit.org. The National Achievement Scholarship Program, conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, is a privately financed academic competition that operates without government assistance. It was initiated in 1964 to recognize academically promising black students throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding program participants. To date, over 29,500 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth $94 million. “Helping young adults fulfill their academic potential as they prepare for the college of their choice is one of our greatest joys”, said Dr. Gary Arnold, Head of School at LRCA. “We can’t wait to see what the Lord has planned for these young women.”
